Hilo to Red Road
This full day tour is for the people who truly want to experience “the other side of the big island”. We will head to the beautiful bayfront city of Hilo from Kona with our first stop in the cowboy town of Waimea/Kamuela with its lush green rolling hills for a photo op with the bronzed horse and cowboy. Our next stop will be Kolekole Park, a charming beach side park with a waterfall. Then to Akaka Falls for a short hike through a cool and crisp rain forest trail and be rewarded with this gorgeous waterfall featuring a stunning 422 foot drop before arriving in the beautiful city of Hilo. In Hilo, we will visit Liliuokalani Park & Gardens, a beautifully landscaped Japanese gardens on Hilo’s famous Banyon Drive, and Coconut Island, where you’ll love the walk over the footbridge connecting to this Hilo Bay island that offers amazing views of the bay and Hilo. Our next destination will be the quirky eclectic town of Pahoa for lunch. We will now head deep into the Puna district stopping at Lava Tree State Park, a one of a kind park where you can see still standing Ohia trees that were covered with fast moving lava in a beautiful manicured park setting. Then to the Ahlanuii Hot Ponds and Park, a volcanic heated pond you can soak your toes in or take a very warm swim. A great place to relax and watch the waves rolling in and out. Kaimu Black Sand Beach where in May of 1990, the Kilauea lava flow overtook the town of Kalapana and world-renowned Kaimu Black Sand Beach. Take a 5-10 minute walk across the other-worldly volcanic landscape from Kalapana to the natural rebuilding Kaimu Beach. We then take a break and stop at Uncle Roberts for an amazing smoothie. Finally, we’ll head back up the famous gorgeous Red Road for our return trip to Kona via the saddle road.
